Canada Disability Benefit 2024 Bill C-22 Updates
On 22nd of June 2023, the New Disability Bill C-22 received Royal Assent and on 29 June 2024, the New Disability Bill was published for public comment. The proposed consultation period was extended from 30 days to 86 days and the interested ones can make comments and suggest necessary changes till the 23rd of September 2024 Soon after all the formal processions are completed, the Canada Revenue Agency will be rolling out the renewed benefit plan for eligible candidates. For the period of the upcoming six years, the federal government has allocated $6.1 billion for Canada Disability Benefit. On average around $1.4 billion will be spent to cover the cost of disabled citizens including the distribution expenses.
The exact new changes in the Disability Bill will be proposed after the administration is done with the public comments by the 23rd of September 2024. And the beneficiaries will be able to know the details only after the comments are evaluated. But as of now in August 2024, the payment amount and eligibility are going to remain the same as there is no major change proposed now. The disability benefits before retirement, after retirement, and for children have not changed much and the payments will be coming on pre-scheduled dates for the remaining months in 2024.

Canada Disability Benefit 2024 Bill C-22 Eligibility
Disability Payment before retirement
- You are under the age of 65
- Have made a significant investment in the disability plans
- Have a condition that prevents the applicant from performing everyday activities and they could not do any substantial work
- Also have a disability for a long time and cannot be cured
- The condition can also result in death as well
- Have contribution plans in the CRA disability schemes
Eligibility for individual’s post-retirement
- You are between the ages of 60 and 65
- Holds a social insurance number
- To get the disability benefits after retirement, make sure that the applicant is receiving the disability payment for more than 15 months
- The condition has occurred after reaching the age of retirement and the retirement payment has started for applicants
- Have a long-term disability for an indefinite duration and it may also result in death
- Have prevented the persons from doing substantial work and making a living out of working
- Are permanent residents of the country
- Have supporting documents for residency
Disability Eligibility for Children
- Parents are permanent residents of the country
- They have made valid contributions to the nation’s economy
- The applicant is either under the age of 18 or between 18 and 25 and attending school full time
When will the New Canada Disability Benefit Start?
The benefits for disability have not stopped benefiting individuals and the citizens are enjoying the payments every month. But the new payment will start and there will be new eligibility and different regulations after the 23rd of September 2024. In case the applicant lives in Quebec, they cannot apply to the Canada Disability Benefit in 2024 as they will have a separate benefit plan administered by the local authorities. Citizens other than children will not be considered eligible if they have not made any significant contributions to the Canada Disability Benefits. As of now the maximum benefit amount for the citizens is $1606 and it is going to increase from December 2024. From December 2024, the disability payment will be $1616 for the eligible candidates.
How to Apply for Canada Disability Benefits After New Recommendation?
- Sing into the “My Service Canada Account”
- Complete the submission of the application form
- Submit the medical form attested by a medical professional or a practicing doctor
- If the medical form is rejected by the professional, the application form too will be rejected as well
- You can either submit the forms via email
- Once the submission is done, the CRA will leave a response for the applicant informing about the status of the application form
- It may take a little longer to get started with the payments so you must apply in a timely to avoid any unnecessary delay
If the applicant does not have a long-term illness that continues for an indefinite duration, then they cannot apply for the Canada Disability Payments.
